General Questions About Dancing and Solely Swing:
- What if I've never danced before? Can I still come out to dances?
- Yes, absolutely! We begin every dance with a beginner lesson, so just show up and have fun!
- Do I have to bring a partner?
- Nope! Due to the culture of swing dancing, you'll be switching partners throughout the night, so no need to come with a partner.
- What is the dress code?
- We don't have one. Expect to be moving quite a bit, so dress appropriately. Shoes that are somewhat slippery are desired so that you can slide and spin more easily. If you'd like, dress to the theme of the dance!
- Are there any etiquette rules I should know?
- So glad you asked. Since swing is a partner dance, please arrive clean and wearing deodorant for everyone's comfort. It can get a little warm, so be prepared to sweat!
- Swing is a partner dance in which it is customary to dance with multiple people throughout the course of an evening. Anyone can ask anyone else to dance, regardless of gender or whether you are the lead or follow. There is a chance the person you ask will say no. You do not know their reasons, so don't take it personally. Just say okay, no problem, then ask someone else!
- Otherwise, just be polite.
- Do I need to bring anything?
- Nope! Just yourself and a good attitude. During COVID-19, please bring your own mask and water bottle.
- Is there a safety policy?
- ABSOLUTELY. At Solely Swing, your comfort and safety is our number one concern. If at any point in your time with us you feel uncomfortable, please talk to one of our volunteers or officers (wearing yellow sashes) and we will get things sorted out right away.
- I've heard Solely Swing is a volunteer organization. How can I help?
- Glad you asked! On the facebook site of each in-person dance, there will be a link to a volunteer form. Fill it out, and voila, you're all signed up!
- Is there an admission fee?
- All Solely Swing dances and lessons are completely free!
- Where can I sign up for progressive lessons (outside of social dances)?
- Solely Swing has resumed offering progressive lessons as of Spring 2022! They are taught as four lesson sets. Different sets have different prerequisites, so check them out in our events page to find which ones interest you!
- I love this club! How can I join/get more involved?
- If you would like to volunteer, please join our email list! If volunteers are needed, a sign-up sheet will be sent out the week before the dance. You can reach out to us via email (solelyswing@gmail.com) and ask to be added to the email distribution. Someone will get back to you shortly!
